The Montessori Method

Novi Woods Montessori Center

The Novi Woods Montessori Center's system of education is both a philosophy of child growth and a rationale for guiding such growth. The certified Montessori teachers assure that the Montessori philosophy tempered with professional common sense meets the needs of each child.

Our system of education is based on the philosophies of Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952), a world famous educator and psychologist. The child's needs and interests open up new worlds, and the teachers help in the process of self-construction by offering a progression of materials which satisfy the emotional, physical, intellectual and social needs of the child.

The Montessori classroom is a careful balance of academic, social and physical skills where the child works at an individual pace and also in a group setting. He enjoys freedom of choice and utilizes attractive child-sized materials which helps him gain concentration, confidence and co-ordination. The child’s needs and interests form the basic starting point, and the teacher gives the child the means to discover new worlds and guide him through "sensitive periods" - times when learning a particular skill is effortless and exciting.

The pre-school and kindergarten curriculum include practical life activities, which help the child care for himself, the environment, learn social graces, develop his fine motor skills, and are building blocks to reading and writing.

We offer an infant, toddler, pre-school kindergarten and latchkey program in a safe and nurturing environment. We cultivate a careful balance of the social, physical and scholastic skills needed by your child.

Our Center is equipped with a full range of Montessori materials that encourage manipulation, questions, discoveries and knowledge about the world. We stress the process of learning rather than the end result. Through the Montessori materials your child is introduced to Sensorial and Practical Life activities, art, music, computers, gymnastics, math, reading, a foreign language and science. We also offer field trips, special guest and science fairs.

Our Montessori Classes constantly fascinate children and parents.
We have intriguing learning material, touchable shapes, culutural
objects in a prepared environment. This environment reflects the
care that will reinforce the child's independence and intellectual
development.

Students are typically working around the classroom alone or with
a friend. They are so involved that visitors are struck by the
"peaceful atmosphere" and calmness in the room. Teachers will be
found with 1 or 2 children, advising, presenting lessons or
observing the class. They act as guides - guiding them towards
discovery and learning.

The Director

Angelina Pullukat has been active with the Montessori Community
for 30 years and has been the director of Novi Woods Montessori
Center for eleven Years. She has Masters in education and is still
an "active" student in the Montessori classroom. "I find that
learning is a continous process and am constantly fascinated by a
child's mind". She enjoys travelling and "making material" for the
classrooms and is active in teacher's workshop. She brings a
joyous dedication to "following the child".

The Day Care room substitutes for the child's activities at home with opportunities for fantasy, housekeeping, puppetry, music and a variety of construction and table top toys. Our beautiful, natural surroundings can by enjoyed from the large windows in every room. Our outdoor equipment encourages physical growth and large motor skills. The infants/ toddlers have a separate play area with age appropriate play equipment.

The staff of Novi Woods Montessori Center brings dedication and commitment to the facility with a combination of Montessori training and child care experience. They come with an awareness of how a young child develops and learn, and serve as resource persons, observers, role models and care givers.

"He learns everything without knowing he is learning it........ treading always in the path of joy."
